Are you like us in that you are always on the hunt for that perfect training plan?
That never-ending quest for the golden goose, that will get you super fit, super fast in no time at all?
Let’s be honest, it doesn’t really exist does it? Despite really wishing it were the case, most of us would benefit more from just being consistent with our running. And guess what? Consistency comes with enjoyment.
Enjoyment comes from a place where we place a higher value on the importance of having fun, staying present, and connecting with others during your runs.
Chasing the perfect training plan can lead you down a rabbit hole of constant tweaks, self-doubt, and even burnout.
There’s always the risk of (and one we know too well) deciding that you need to tweak the training plan, so it doesn’t make sense to start until Monday (which will of course be a rest day). By the time Monday comes, things change and, well, you know the rest.

While it’s definitely a very good thing to have a plan in place, trying to make it perfect can actually hold you back. Instead, focus on being consistent and getting out there to run regularly. Trust us, you’ll see way better results in the long run.
This is one of the reasons we’re massive fans of TrainAsOne – it takes all the thought process out of the equation. Just start up your watch or phone and go. Do what it tells you. By taking the thought and worry out of this, it helps you relax.
Away from the plan, there are also a few other ways we think can help to keep your running routine consistent, the focus of which is on the fact you’ve got to enjoy it. Here are a few tips to help make your runs more fun:

- Smile at others: A simple smile can create a sense of camaraderie and lift your spirits during a run. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference in your overall experience.
- Stop for a chat: If you bump into a fellow runner or even a friendly pedestrian, why not exchange a few words? Engaging with others can create a sense of community, break up the monotony of a run, and help build lasting connections.
- Be present: While running, try to stay present and appreciate the moment. Focus on your breathing, your stride, and the rhythm of your footfalls. This mindful approach can make your runs more enjoyable and help to relieve stress.
- Ditch the phone (well put it away, it’s always good to have a phone on you in case of accidents, injuries or the essential mid-run selfie), ditch the earphones (for a good portion of the run) and focus on everything else. Do stop to take photos of interesting things if it’s something you like, stopping isn’t going to make that much of a difference.
- Enjoy your surroundings: Make an effort to soak up the beauty of your environment. Whether you’re running through a park, alongside a river, or on a bustling city street, take in the sights, sounds, and smells. This appreciation for your surroundings can enhance the pleasure of your runs and create lasting memories.
Forget about trying to make your training perfect. What really matters is being consistent and enjoying your runs. By cultivating a love for running, staying present during your workouts, and connecting with others, you’ll find it easier to maintain a regular running routine.
So, lace up your shoes, head out the door, and embrace the joy of running β one step at a time.
Oh, and don’t forget to take a quick selfie while you’re on the way – it’s for fun after all.
