The Road to Kraków – Week 3: A series of unfortunate events and a twist.

The week’s (lack of) training

It didn’t begin so well. Following the Sunday long run from last week (the one that turned into a bike due to the knee issue) Liam’s not been able to run this week. At all. Injury is such a frustration and even at this early stage is a little worrying for being able to even get to the start line in Kraków.

There was also a big decision made about training direction this week and one that goes way beyond Kraków into next Triathlon season. So let’s get into it.

The backbone of the week as ever was our continuing daily yoga practice. As we move into the fourth week we’re both feeling much better for it. Whether it’s a reduction in back ache for Gabi or a noticable improvement in mobility across the board for Liam the physical improvements have been really good to see.

Yoga-ing (well posing pretending for a photo at least…)

On top of that there’s a mental aspect to it. The focus on the breath through the practice has definitely transfered out of just yoga too. There’s something revitalising about being aware of your own breath. Through that, and because we tend to do it late on, it’s almost like a mental reset button before heading to sleep. We both highly recommend it. Head over to Youtube and look up Yoga with Adriene. It’s great for beginners or intermediates alike.

Training wise, there were two bike rides for Liam on the turbo trainer during the week and runs on the treadmill for Gabi. Both easy with some free style intervals thrown in, one with sprints and one with a climb on Zwift. Tough but short workouts. The best thing about our little gym is that one of us can be on the bike and the other run, it means you never get lonely!

Saturday and Sunday were mostly for working in the garden where we did a very large strength session… We moved about 2 tonnes of soil and sand, followed by rocks and pebbles as we were building ourselves some new raised beds for veggies!

Veggies… coming soon

At the end of the week on the Sunday there was a bit of a twist. There was a test session on the bike, a ramping FTP test to see how the bike power performance is. This wasn’t part of the Garmin training plan. During the week, Liam’s found a new coach that we’re going to start working with to hopefully build some resilience for running and all round fitness to get through Kraków and be ready for the triathlon season.

We’ll share a little bit further about that after we’ve been through a few weeks of training!

So it’s onwards. 3 months to Kraków. Not much time, lots to do. It’s all very exciting!
