Running Fast, Living Slow

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the present moment. The idea of run fast, live slow is to have a reminder to find a balance between ambition and relaxation, striving for our goals while also taking the time to truly appreciate our surroundings. As I discovered during a recent run through the forest, embracing this mindset just makes things feel better.

The Not-So-Easy Run: A Crash Course in Mindfulness

There I was, lacing up my Altras and heading out for what I intended to be an easy run through the forest that we live in. The sun was shining, casting dappled light through the trees. A gentle breeze was flowing through the forest, the river creating it’s own tune, the damp earth muffling the sound of footsteps, accentuating the sounds of the forest around.

As I trundled along, I heard the sound of something paddling through the water. One of the deer in the forest was quite clearly in need of a drink and was startled by the ungrateful plodding of an out of shape human crashing past. Of course, you simply have to stop in that moment to watch it disappear off into the trees. Once alone again I just found myself listening to the symphony of birdsong that filled the air.

This unexpected pause in my run made me realize how often I barrel through life, either focussed on a goal or in a form of autopilot not paying attention to anything, forgetting to appreciate the world around me. Run fast, live slow, is a call to have your goals, but is also a call to strike a balance between these two competing forces

Running Fast, Living Slow: A Balancing Act for Life

The essence of “run fast, live slow” is about finding equilibrium. “Run fast” represents working hard, achieving goals, and pursuing personal and professional growth. On the other hand, “live slow” is about taking the time to nurture relationships, appreciate the present moment, and engage in self-care.

“Running fast” means giving your all when it’s time to pursue your dreams, be it a promotion at work, a personal best in your favourite sport, or mastering the perfect meal. “Living slow,” on the other hand, is about savouring the moment, nurturing relationships, and, yes, stopping to smell the roses—or watch the deer, as it were.

It’s an idea that we should aim to cut the middle ground, being neither focussed nor present. The mindless scrolling. The mouth agape watching of nothing particular on the TV.

We also need to balance the priority work, and maintaining a quality over quantity mindset.

So, how can you embrace the “run fast, live slow” philosophy and bring balance to your own life? Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Set goals that align with your values: Chasing goals that truly resonate with your inner self will make it easier to stay motivated and maintain balance.
  2. Be present in the moment: Put down your phone, take a deep breath, and really focus on the people and experiences around you. Trust me, those notifications can wait.
  3. Make time for self-care: You can’t run fast if you’re running on empty. Schedule regular “me time” to recharge and reflect.
  4. Cultivate connections: Foster deep, meaningful relationships with the people who matter most to you. Remember, we’re all in this crazy thing called life together.
  5. Learn to be flexible: Sometimes life throws curveballs, and we need to adjust our plans accordingly. Embrace change and adapt your approach as needed.
  6. Prioritize quality over quantity: Whether it’s work, exercise, or socializing, focus on doing things well rather than trying to cram as much as possible into your schedule.
  7. Say “no” when necessary: It’s crucial to set boundaries and recognize when you need to take a step back. Learning to say “no” can be one of the most empowering skills you can develop.
  8. Find joy in the small things: Take a moment to appreciate the beauty in the everyday – the first sip of coffee in the morning, the laughter of a loved one, or the satisfaction of a job well done.

My easy run through the forest, complete with deer sighting and a birdsong serenade, reminded me of the importance of embracing the “run fast, live slow” philosophy. By finding balance between our ambitious and mindful selves, we can lead more fulfilling lives.

So, the next time you’re out for a run, or simply going about your daily routine, remember to pause, take a deep breath, and appreciate the world around you. Try to let the beauty of the world inspire you to live a more balanced, present life.
